GENERAL INFORMATION OF THE STATISTICS DEPARTMENT

Nowadays Statistical procedures and methodologies are widely used in governmental and non-governmental agencies, research institutions and the private sectors. There is no field of studies in which Statistics has no application. The Department of Statistics in Bule Hora University was established in 2007 and it has been supplying statistics professionals who can manage the day-to-day activities of major statistical units and serve as senior statisticians in various organizations.
Nowadays, statistics plays a very important role in supporting and advancing development efforts at national and global levels especially in decision making. Since its establishment the department has graduated batches with BSc. degree in Statistics for 7 times.
Vision and Mission of the Department
Vision
The Department of Statistics seeks to be a primary center of excellence in statistical training, practice, applications and research and promote strong interdisciplinary links with other institutions that are involved in statistical activities.
Mission statements
 The mission of the Department includes:
  1. Develop fundamental statistical theory and methodology.
  2. Provide statistics education at higher level to alleviate the shortage in skilled manpower in the various sectors of the country.
  3.  Nurture and stimulate the discipline and profession of statistics through publications and staff participation in major local and international conferences.
  4.   Educate and train statisticians that are firmly grounded in statistical methodology, computing and theory.
Objectives of the program
3.1 Main objective
 The main objective of the program is to train and prepare the students for a wide range of professional activities as practicing statisticians.
3.1 Specific Objectives
The specific objectives of the program are:
  1. To produce highly qualified professionals in statistics.
  2. To prepare statistics professionals that will provide leadership in statistical services in the public and private sectors
  3.  To enhance the research capacity of the department and the University.
  4. To demonstrate competence in data collection, management, summary and analysis required at many production and development sectors day to day activities, write clear statistical reports and communicate the results of statistical analyses.
  5. To conduct sample surveys, census and experimental designs.
  6.  Use statistical software to carry out necessary computation for statistical analysis of data and demonstrate professional ethics in his/her career
  7.  To supervise and/or manage activities of statistical units or offices, assist and advise in the provision of statistical services in research establishments, business and government and non-government institutions, give trainings in Statistical methods and Software’s
  8. To develop Consultancy works contribute to the ongoing development of the country in his/her area with sense of responsibility, and demonstrate social responsibility and capacity to manage teamwork.
