Department of English Language and Literature

 Introduction

Bule Hora University was established in 2004 E.C as one of the Higher Education Institution Universities in Ethiopia. The University plays its role in giving quality education and training for all, and   a research based community service and etc. Following the establishment of the University, Under the College of Social Sciences and Humanities Department of English Language and Literature has started running undergraduate program since 2005 E.C. The Department has started BA in English Language and Literature major with 28 students in 2005 E C in regular. In addition to major courses, the department offered common courses such as Communicative English Skills, Basic Writing Skills and other common courses accordingly to all departments. Also, the department has started summer program since 2008 E. C with 53 students. Furthermore, in the year 2012-2013 it expands its program running postgraduate program in MA in TEFL with seven (7) students. Besides, from 2013-14 EC academic calendars, the department has seven (7) students MA in Literature in English.
The department is dedicated to excellence in teaching, scholarship, competent human power, well-disciplined educators and service. The department upholds the following mission, vision and motto:
Mission
The mission of the department is to empower students to become resourceful in English Communicative competency.
Vision
The vision of the Department of English Language and Literature is to become a center of excellence in creating demanding level for teaching and research in English Language, Literature and Linguistics.
 Motto of the department
Giving priority for teaching –learning process, we work to improve our students’ Language proficiency.
To accomplish the mission and vision of the department as well as the University, the following strategic plan has been produced:
Future plan (strategic direction)
It has been initiated to expand BA students’ intake capacity in both regular and extension programs. Also, the department tries to expand post graduate programs MA in TEFL, Literature and Linguistics. Moreover, the department has scheduled to employee human resource and upgrades its instructors’ capacity by sending them for further training (PhD), participating in different training especially those focus on academic researches such as:
  • GIS,
  • SPPS software,
  • Zotero,
  • Qualitative/Quantitative methods of developing research,
  • Reliability and validity test variation in research work,
  • End Note referencing
  • Developing Project proposal (grant) etc.
Objectives of the Department
The department has responsibilities:
  • To train English Language Professionals for various competencies and occupational purposes;

  • To train middle and high level professionals in English language and literature at undergraduate and then post graduate levels;

  • To train under graduate students on how to develop senior essay, write CV, etc;

  • To extend the programs so as to address the need of professionals in various fields in the department;

  • To participate in different local and international researches try to have publication on reputable journals ;

  • To train English Language Professionals for technology based equipment available in language laboratory ;

  • To teach students using language laboratory when necessary;

  • To fulfill /prepare plan for resource so as to run teaching-learning process etc.
