Department of Civics and Ethical Studies – Bule Hora University
Overview:
Established in 2006 under the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Department of Civics and Ethical Studies aims to produce competent, ethical citizens equipped to address national and global challenges. Starting with 35 students, it now offers BA programs (regular, weekend, summer) and an MA in Peace and Security Studies (since 2013). With 241 students and 19 staff, the department emphasizes quality teaching, research, and community engagement to foster responsible citizenship, good governance, and conflict resolution.

By 2022, the department aspires to be a premier choice in Bule Hora University, recognized regionally and globally for excellence in civic education, ethical leadership, and peace studies, shaping graduates with critical thinking, employability, and a commitment to societal transformation.
Mission:
To provide quality education, conduct problem-solving research, and deliver community services that promote ethical citizenship, good governance, and conflict resolution. The department equips students with civic competence, moral integrity, and skills to address corruption, human rights, and peacebuilding challenges.

Affiliated Programs:
  • Undergraduate:
    • BA in Civics and Ethical Studies (Regular/Weekend/Summer) – 151 credit hours (246 ECTS).
    • Admission: Grade 12 (social science preferred) or diploma holders with relevant experience.
  • Graduate:
    • MA in Peace and Security Studies (2 years, 83.6 ECTS).
    • Admission: BA/BSc in relevant fields; minimum CGPA of 2.00.
Graduation Requirements:
  • BA: 151 credit hours, CGPA ≥ 2.00.
  • MA: Thesis defense, CGPA ≥ 3.00 (max two "C+" grades).
