The Department of Afaan Oromoo and Literature

Background
The Department of Afaan Oromoo and Literature is one of the departments under the College of Social Sciences and Humanities. It was established in 2014 G.C. The department has been running the BA program since its establishment. It was in 2015 that the department launched the summer program, and in 2018 weekend programs. The department has graduated three batches of students with Bachelor of Arts in regular program. By taking into account the current demand for folkloric studies especially in Oromo culture, literature and Gada system the department birthed BA regular program in Oromo Folklore and Literature in 2018. Currently, the department is independently running a regular undergraduate program. Recently, Afaan Oromo and Literature department has been launched two postgraduate programs (M.A in Teaching Afaan Oromoo and Literature and Ph.D. in Oromo Literature and Folklore) respectively in 2019 and 2020 G.C. Regarding human resources, for the sake of the newly launched programs, the department has been working with both Addis Ababa and Jimma University staff as a joint appointment.
The Afaan Oromoo department needs to create language experts that have reliable knowledge about the language and its society. The department also needs them to be aware of the language, literature and culture of the society. Modern issues regarding language like multilingualism and bilingualism, cross-cultural communication, mass communication, public relations, etc are also emphasized to enable the candidates gain general knowledge about related fields.
The Specific Objectives of the department are:
  • To produce qualified professionals who can serve as researcher, public relation officer, news reporter, editor, translator, artist, etc.
  • To coordinate various researches conducted in and/or on Afaan-Oromoo language, linguistics, literature and folklore
  • To conduct different community based projects in collaboration with independently or in collaboration with the institutions
  • To conduct training and workshops for further advancement of the language and, take part in community based development activities
  • To carry out research activities to standardize Afaan Oromoo
  • To offer quality courses that can enable students ready for various occupational purposes
The general objective of Afaan Oromoo & Literature degree program is to train high-level qualified personnel capable of working in different settings: mass media workers, editors, authors, secondary school teachers, and public relation officers for governmental and non-governmental organizations. It also helps learners promote research skills in and/or on Afaan Oromoo and develop their concepts and knowledge of linguistics, literature, socio-cultural aspects of Oromo language.
The Specific objectives are:
  • To help the learner acquire basic knowledge of linguistics, literature and language skills in general and Afaan Oromoo in particular.
  • To equip the learner with basic professional knowledge, concepts and skills which enable them to engage in various settings.
  • To provide the learner with the general rules and principles of the language with respect to literature, mass media, public relations and communication.
  • To develop joint and student-centred learning and use problem solving techniques in a number of different situations.
  • To enable students carry out activities in relation to their fields of specialization;
  • To enrich (develop) students generic skills to advance their multidirectional
Afaan Oromoo and Literature department has been engaged in delivering a public speech, community services, and preparing seminars on linguistics, literature, folklore, and socio-aspects of the Oromo languages and culture. Intentionally, how to manage the preservation and transformation of Oromo language, literature, and folkloric aspects.

VISION
The department of Afaan Oromoo and Literature aspiring to conduct further researches and to become the center of academic excellence in Oromo language, literature, folklore and skill studies by adopting newly emerging paradigms and analytical thinking as well as practices in the areas of language and literature studies which lay the ground for the advancement of quality education and sustainable development in the country.
