Overview of Informatics College
Three departments (such as computer science, Information Technology, and information science) were started under the faculty of Engineering and Technology that has been established in the 2005/2011 academic year at Bule Hora University in response to the government’s program of expanding and diversifying university education. These Departments have stayed under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology until it was placed under the College of Informatics in the new University structure in the 2010 academic year. In the 2010 academic year, the college of informatics was separated from the faculty of engineering and technology as a self-regulating college by having five undergraduate departments: Computer Science, Information Technology, software engineering, information system, and Information science department. The objective of establishing the College is to produce an excellent competent computer science expertise, software engineer, IT expertise, system analysts, information scientist’s professionals who are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to solve individuals, and organizational problems of the country and bring about growth to the whole world. Along with the production of professionals, the college carries public responsibility to back up the development effort of the nation through the provision of quality education, communal problem solving, research activities, community-based service, and many others. Currently, the college of informatics has been radically influencing the advancement in science, technology, engineering, business, health, education, and many other areas of human endeavor. Therefore, everyone needs to know about computers, and many want to study computing in some form. For the past two years, the College is offering six major undergraduate degree programs in all departments. Currently, the college has accepted and enrolled more than 364 students under the regular program and 554 students under the weekend/summer undergraduate program in 6 departments namely computer science, information technology, software engineering, information system, information science, and Computer Science and Engineering. Out of the total 364 assigned regular students to our college (Department of computer science: 94 students, Information Technology: 102 students, software engineering: 45 students, information system: 40 students, and information science: 49 students, Computer Science and Engineering: 10 students. From 554 students following their class under the weekend program, 102 of them are joined the computer science department under the weekend undergraduate program, 160 of them are joined IT under the weekend undergraduate program and 292 of them are following the summer program of bachelor in degree in IT. The College is running with four post-graduate programs namely: MSc in computer science both in (Regular and weekend), Information Technology both in (Regular and Weekend), Software Engineering (Regular only) and Data Science. And also currently around 39 regular and 32 weekend students, Total:71 students are available on post-graduate programs.
